Welcome home, Manuel!

April 10, 2008

Manuel shouldn’t be alive. He shouldn’t be writing his name or trying to communicate. He shouldn’t be feeding himself or walking.  And he certainly shouldn’t be smiling!

Dispatch Foundation and The Elias Fund were with Manuel and Elias for several days in February and brought greetings and love from the States. The support from his family and his family of friends around the world has given Manuel incredible strength.

Elias was inspiring. He took a leave of absence, moved to Harare and stayed with his sister-in-law. He wore a suit to “fit-in” with the city and spent each afternoon with Manuel. Those past months had taken an obvious physical and mental toll on Elias but he continued to smile, laugh and love.

Two weeks ago, Manuel came home to Chiredzi! He is with his parents and continues to recover.  He is walking and smiling.  His right arm is paralyzed and his is relearning how to speak. He plans to return to Harare for further physical therapy.

So far, Elias’ company has paid all the medical expenses and Elias’ salary. Now, The Ndakasimba Trust will begin paying the bills. Thank you each for your support. Your generosity has raised over $18,000, but Manuel is in continued need of your support. The cost for January was $280; February increased to $683. His medical expenses for March and April are not released but will certainly increase.

You have made Manuel’s recovery possible and your continued generosity will provide for Manuel’s future. The Elias Fund and Dispatch Foundation are committed to Manuel’s full recovery; Thanks for your support!
